The above nude silhouette image was taken from a shoot I did a few years ago for an Italian cosmetics company to be used as their advertising campaign that year for some body care products. The lighting is essentially very simple because it all comes from behind the model but there are a few tricks and good uses of technique that help to create the perfect nude silhouette effect.
Photographers who only shoot images for personal use that will never be published really don’t need a model release, but professionals or indeed any amateur who is publishing material for commercial usage should generally obtain a signed release from the model, where the subject consents to the usage of their image in various media as specified in the release. This was shot as part of a series for a beauty fitness editorial in Italy, so first of all I needed a model with an athletic physique, but it was equally important to find a suitable location, so that it didn’t completely dominate the subject, but instead helped to create the desired feel for the whole set of images. The above nude image is was taken as part of a beauty editorial I did in Italy on the coast of Tuscany with a beautiful white sandy beach. The model was a crazy Brazilian girl with a lot of personality and she was great fun. I remember we set out early that morning in a borrowed Alfa Romeo (which later broke down) together with another model from Iceland. Continue reading
The image above was one that I originally did for a magazine editorial in Milan. I remember at the time how I had really struggled to find a good model as I travelled from one agency to another. Part of the problem was that I was brand new so none of the bookers were feeling any need to be particularly helpful to a new guy with no real history of big jobs. Continue reading
The above nude image was part of a beauty assignment I did in South Africa for an Italian cosmetics client. The team which flew out there must have been about ten people but not everybody was there to work directly on the photography.
This particular day had been extremely hectic, since we were unable to start as early as I would have liked and there had already been a shoot on the beach that morning with the same model followed by another shoot at a rented house nearby. It then took an hour or so in the mini van to reach the final location before we started the hard walk up to the waterfall. Continue reading

Something earlier reminded me of a funny story from many years ago and I thought it was worth retelling as a bit of fun to kick off the new year. Going back to the early 90′s there was a rather well known fashion photographer in Milan had just taken on a new assistant (not me) and had asked him to pack away some equipment that had to be transported to an assignment where they would be shooting a series of nude photography images for a beauty editorial. The lens you see above is a Canon 85mm F1.8 that I originally purchased back in about 1992 if my memory serves me right. It’s actually the second oldest lens in my collection and I’ve used it on countless jobs over the years. Remarkably it still feels & handles like a brand new lens, performing well in the era of high resolution digital cameras, even though it was very much intended for film use when originally designed.
