It’s inevitable that you have times which are full of inspiration and progress, while at other moments it all just feels wrong. Austin Powers would say, you’ve lost your mojo baby. Personally I hate the days when I only seem to be dealing with problems or one of those really tedious tasks that are nothing more than a means to an end, but bring you no satisfaction at all.
Sometimes I seem to go though extended periods when I am stuck in a round of unwanted problem solving. Perhaps the broadband has become inexplicably slow or the printer driver is refusing to play nicely since the latest upgrade with the operating system. Maybe you just have a pile of unwanted emails in your inbox that don’t fill you with any kind of joy but you are obliged to answer them or you’ll lose out in some way.
It could be that I have my rose tinted glasses on, but I think there was less pressure and distraction in this sense before our lives seemed to revolve quite so much around our computers and the internet. It’s too easy to get bogged down in the details and lose site of the reason we got involved with photography i.e to take pictures.
A while ago I saw Steve Jobs from Apple talk about something along these very lines. He said that every morning he goes to work and sometimes he knows it won’t be fun or he is doing something is doesn’t want to. When that happens for 4 mornings in a row he asks himself why and what he can do to change it.
When you find yourself bogged down as a photographer and you’ve lost your mojo you need to find that muse or something that inspires you to find the enthusiasm which keeps you moving forward.
